Where each app is strongest
Doppel is built around people with lives of their own. Companions post moments from their day, text you first about your plans and theirs, and can sit with you on video while you study or work. It is newer and smaller: it has a handful of companions today, and it is opening to new people in waves.
Character.AI has the biggest range by far: millions of user-created characters, tools to build your own character with a custom voice, and support for 28 languages. It runs on the web as well as iPhone and Android. Open-ended chat is limited to users 18 and over.
Replika has the longest history: it has been around since 2017. It works on iPhone, Android and the web, and offers voice calls, image generation, avatar customization and app integrations.
Tolan is voice-first and very highly rated on the App Store, with a 3D alien character designed to feel warm without pretending to be human. It is rated 13+, the youngest age rating of the four.
